The Avuvi Project officially began in 2004 with the importation of four dogs and two bitches from the country of Benin, all of the basenji type. The goal of the project is to import and maintain a small, viable population of aboriginal dogs from West Africa, and to study their position in the larger canine world as well as the basenji population. Project members hope to return to Benin in 2008 in order to bring back another selection of puppies, but also to DNA sample entire villages worth of dogs, and amass digital still and video of the dogs, their people, and their environment. 50% of the profits from the sale of products in this category goes to support the Avuvi Project. This fund raising effort is directed at subsidizing a trip to import these magnificent little dogs and document their origins.
